Why I’m no Longer Talking to White People about Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge – review by Debora Targino
Why I’m no Longer Talking to White People about Race is a pleasant and uncomfortable read about racism by the award-winning journalist Reni Eddo-Lodge.
The book was based on a blog post with the same title published in 2014 by the same author. The reading is highly informative and well researched. It has seven very well connected chapters, resembling seven long essays on topics connected to racism, such as feminism, class, and white privilege. The chapter about Black British history is fascinating. It discusses concepts such as colour blindness, structural racism, and positive discrimination, all backed up by staggering numbers and statistics. The arguments raised in the book are provoking and thoughtful, leading us to question our ideologies and inconsistencies.
This reading invites us to resist, individually and collectively, the structural racism that still permeates our society. I felt angry and touched; but, most importantly, moved with a sense of responsibility to raise awareness and tackle this issue.
