Agnès Varda was a Belgium-born French film director, screenwriter, photographer and artist. Her pioneering work was central to the development of the widely influential French New Wave film movement.
The Feminist Library https://feministlibrary.co.uk/ houses a large collection of materials that have been collected since the women’s liberation movement of the 1970s and supports research, activist and community projects. The library moved to Peckham in 2019. People of all genders are welcome in the space.
As the Feminist Library looks forward to celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, Varda’s One Sings, the Other Doesn’t(L’Une Chante, L’Autre Pas) is a particularly appropriate film to screen as it was made in the era in which the library was founded. It chronicles the friendship of two women searching for their identities in 1970s France.
