Memes, often characterized by their humorous and viral nature, have become a widespread form of online expression, shaping the way we engage with and understand contemporary issues. “Meme-tivism for Critical Data Literacy” explores the immense potential of memes and their vernacular creativity as an informative and transformative tool for critical data literacy through an intersectional feminist lens.
Acknowledging the uneven distribution of power, control and knowledge over data, feminist data futures should be seeked through critical and creative literacy methods, mediums, tools and tactics that unpack, and communicate the existing imbalances rather than perpetuating the status quo and the matrix of domination. This workshop offers a space to co-create internet memes to communicate some of the risks, harms, practices, concerns and concepts within data and data-driven algorithmic process.
