Football Reading Group

We are excited to invite you to the next Football Reading Group session on Monday 22nd May at 7pm! 

In March, we hosted a special new session of @against.the.run.of.play’s reading group, to take stock of what’s been happening in Women’s football since the last WC. Our OG plan was to re-run ATROP’s 2018 sessions in Deptford, however our session with you all in March was so great that we have decided to change course and add another new session… and propose a collaboration!

So, the next session will be all about the football fan.

“Despite the bad reputation, football fans are far from a uniformed bunch. From the ultra to community organisers to producers of podcasts, memes, bootleg shirts, zines and even academic criticism, fandom takes on many guises and has many cultural outputs. This session looks at fandom through the grassroots vs the top flight gaze, the lone figure of the fan and the collective fan club and what brings one to become a fan of a certain club or player in the first place.”

We will send out the reading list in the next few weeks!

Our aim for this reading group is for it to be monthly, with the possibility that it is hosted in different locations and led by an evolving group of organisers. At the end of this session we will lay these ideas out and discuss ways to get involved. If you’d like to be involved with the reading group and help shape the theme for a future session but can’t make it on 22 May then please be in touch to let us know.

As we said last time, we are really keen to dive into these subjects together as a community. It was amazing to hear from many different people last session, and see different grassroots teams represented too!

These sessions are open to everyone. We have asked for a donation of £3 for the tickets to financially support the Feminist library, so we appreciate you all chipping in if you are able – and we have put some free tickets in for non-waged folks.
