department of Unruly histories

April 14, 2023 @ 8:00 am - May 25, 2023 @ 5:00 pm

department of Unruly histories is an installation artwork produced by Meera Shakti Osborne and co-curated by Mariam Elnozahy consisting of a collective sonic and material archive built on post-colonial migration stories in London. The work takes on many forms, all emanating from ten audio pieces that document histories of a London that is familiar to many.

The exhibition will take place at Cubitt Artists and will involve a map of London, a zine series from the work, and an audio piece. As a part of the work, there are a total of ten audio pieces that document different intimate histories of migration and dissent, which we will install in different satellite sites around London for the six-week duration of the exhibition at Cubitt. As a part of the exhibition, we will encourage visitors to travel to the different sites, and passersby will be able to have access to the artwork.

The sound work installed at the library is called ‘Sensorial Cruising’ by Black Fly Zine. In this work BFZ reflects on desires, consent, cruising, crushes and more. In the one hour audio piece, they discuss different ways we can relate to ourselves. This work will be particularly relevant to queer women and gender non-conforming folx from the global majority.
