Beyond Policing – Hilary A. Moore Book Review
This handbook is an excellent abolition resource that I encourage everyone to read if they are able to. It provides a thorough and engaging education on abolition, in an accessible and informative format.
Moore provides an excellent tool for anyone wanting to learn more about abolition, with frequent group discussion questions that facilitate wonderful conversations with others (or alone) about what has been learned. I read this handbook alone and found the group discussion very helpful when consolidating my learning. Not only are there discussion questions, but throughout you can find charts visualising myths, facts and meaning on policing and charts exploring abolitionist steps and reformist reforms.
The addition of the case studies is, in my opinion, one of the highlights of the handbook. Five countries from Western Europe are written about in extensive detail, I particularly enjoyed the Northern Ireland case study due to personal ties to the area. However, the most pertinent section for me was Section IV: Next Steps. This section holds a multitude of resources for individual and group action, as well as workshop templates and a resource list with links. This resource makes action accessible to all, no matter your experience, connections, or knowledge. It provides all. The resource is also available for free online.
