Culture Team Update and Call Out

Culture Team Update and Call Out

First a message from Claire Barnett Executive Director of UN Women UK.

Dear Readers,
UN Women UK have just got the green light to fundraise safely for our team in Afghanistan.

UN Women has been working in Afghanistan for over 10 years, with grassroots local partners to:

  • run women and children’s protection centres, where survivors of abuse can seek refuge, medical and psychological support
  • work with women lawyers and judges to provide legal aid in prosecution cases against perpetrators of gender-based violence
  • provide education and skill-building, including leadership training and coaching for women, and support to sell their produce
  • workshops with grassroots activists, leaders, men and boys, to change perceptions around gender equality and ensure women have political and social rights.

We are worried that the huge human rights gains made there could be lost, if we don’t get urgent support to the women and girls enrolled in our programmes on the ground. If you can share our appeal with your friends and colleagues we would be so grateful: gofundme.com/helpwomeninafghanistan

Thank you so much for your support, Claire.

Watching: Afghanistan – Land of endless war | DW Documentary
The documentary begins in the 1960s, in the peaceful Kingdom of Afghanistan. When communists take power, a war begins that will change the face of the country. Women become pawns in ideological battles. After September 11, 2001, Afghan women hope peace may return. They want to determine their own fate. In a first, this film is told exclusively from the point of view of Afghan women, who talk about how their lives have changed. Six women, including the former “Miss Afghanistan 1972” and the current minister for human rights, take the audience on a journey through the splendour and misery of the country. They show the tangible effects of endless war, and how women in particular have become victims of violent politics. But they also show how much courage Afghan women have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7e6tejlTNw

What is the Culture Team?
The Culture Team at the Feminist Library is a group rooted in care and support for cultures and communities that need it.  Currently they are working on Sheroes of Southwark, collaborating with young creatives at UAL who will use their art skills to depict the stories of three women who for decades have worked tirelessly to support the people of Southwark.

The project is still in progress and the aim is to fundraise and shed light on the organisations these women work with such as Southwark Refugee and Migrant Project (SRMP) and The Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers.

The Culture Team is also looking for new members who could contribute to the following projects.

Please get in touch by dropping us an email at culture@feministlibrary.com
