Volunteer Profile – Maya
We are again profiling one of our fabulous volunteers! If you would like to be included in future please do get in touch with emma@feministlibrary.co.uk.
What’s your name?
Maya
What’s your role at the library?
I volunteer at the Feminist Library Bookshop which opens on a Saturday and sells feminist books, zines, merch, crafts, and a host of other things! You can also buy online now via the library website or support us via uk.bookshop.org/shop/feministlibrary
How long have you been a volunteer?
Good question. Honestly I am not sure, 5 years?
What is your favourite thing in the collection?
Probably a zine called Bad Attitude. We only have a few but they have the best images, really vivid colours.
What are you working on right now? e.g. my dissertation, a zine, job outside of library, creative work, learning to ride a bike – anything!
I have two new hobbies! Life drawing and running. I’m finding both are really great to focus the mind and help with anxiety. Brixton Life Drawing is a great life drawing class with a feminist ethos and the Feminist Library has its own running club!
What is your ‘hidden treasure’ recommendation (book, film, zine, record) that you think fem lib fans will love but not necessary know about?
I will say Dirty Girls. It’s this very lo-fi documentary that a teenager somewhere in the US made about the ‘riot grrrls’ that went to his (obviously fairly elite) school. It’s been on YouTube for years and is a total cult classic. They even showed it at the BFI if I remember correctly!
And finally – leave us with your favourite feminist quote, line from a book or poem etc.
‘I would much rather be the obnoxious feminist girl than be complicit in my own dehumanization‘.
