Feminist Library Survival Song

This brilliantly reworked version of Gloria Gaynor’s classic song was unveiled at our benefit on 2nd July. Sing along to the video below and feel free to perform it at any other feminist occasion.

Once I was a book
I was a lonely book
And I languished on the shelf where no one took a look
Then my author came along
She said I need to you to be seen
I’ll donate you to be read at the Feminist Library

And so we went
We went down there
We walked in and we were welcomed
There were bookshelves everywhere
There were posters, magazines
There were workshops, cups of tea
And a lot of happy women
At the Feminist Library

Then Southwark said
‘Walk out the door
Just turn around now
You’re not welcome any more
Because we claim
You refused your rent to pay
We’ll make you crumble
We’ll make you lay down and die’

Oh no, not us
We will survive
As long as we know how to fight
We know we’ll stay alive
We’ve got all our books to keep
We’ve got sisterhood so deep
We will survive
We will survive, hey hey

It took all the strength we had
Not to fall apart
As despite our protests
Southwark showed no change of heart
So we’ve spent our days and nights
Not feeling sorry for ourselves
But working very hard
For a move to somewhere else

So here we go
From strength to strength
We’re not a lonely little library
Still in hock to them
We have gathered Friends around
Who we know will give support
And we’re making lots of plans
To ensure it won’t be fraught

So when we leave
Walk out the door
As Southwark told us
We’re not welcome any more
We will take our many books
We won’t be broken by goodbye
We will not crumble
We will not lay down and die

Oh no, not us
We will survive
As long as we know how to fight
We know we’ll stay alive
We’ve got all our books to keep
We’ve got sisterhood so deep
We will survive
We will survive
Oh Yeay
