Anti Gentrification Month – Call Out

Organisations in London we invite you to be part of Anti-Gentrification Week – a week-long celebration of our communities and our spaces, and a protest against the attempts to push us out of them.

How can you get involved?
We invite you to organise an event between 2nd July and 10th July and submit details to the Feminist Library by 24th June. The event can be anything you like, connected to your campaign or anti gentrification, for example a discussion, a demonstration, film screening, meeting, or social event, and as long as it abides by our Community Policy.

The Feminist Library will coordinate the publicity of all events and activities under the banner of ‘Anti-Gentrification Week’ and these will be advertised on a separate website and through other channels. Any events finalised after the date can be included on online publicity but will miss print.

What is Anti-Gentrification Week?
A partnership between The Feminist Library and other organisations, to come together around our common struggle against gentrification, in solidarity with each other and with all those fighting to retain our spaces and our homes.

AGW is a call for all different campaigns and groups fighting this trend to unite under a single banner while still retaining the individual focus of their cause. It will begin on 2nd July with a Summer Benefit for the ‘Save the Feminist Library’ campaign and will end on Sunday 10th July with a joint picnic at Burgess Park.

The aims of this partnership are:
– To raise the profile of all groups and campaigns fighting to protect their spaces from gentrification and cuts
– To show solidarity with each other
– To celebrate our communities, our spaces and our projects
– To protest the trend of gentrification and amplify the voices of local communities and people
The face of gentrification is different for all of us, yet it is the same forces of neo-liberalism, marketization and public service cuts that are pushing us out in favour of profit making ventures: luxury flats instead of social housing, businesses instead of libraries, private gyms instead of community centres. This is increasing the vulnerabilities of the most vulnerable in our society, erasing the diversity of our communities and creating a city that is increasingly divided on the basis of class, race, ethnicity and other inequalities.

You can also support by:
– Writing about gentrification in any of its forms
– Supporting with coordination, publicity and press
– Support on social media using #AGW2016
– Make a donation towards the costs of organising
– Help us to organise a picnic on Sunday 10th July to mark the end of AGW.

We also invite you to join us for a picnic at Burgess Park on Sunday 10th July to mark the end of AGW.
