Writers Space and discussion group at the Feminist Library

After the first 6 successful months of the Writers Space, the collective has now decided to replace the 4-5pm Feminist Fiction and Poetry reading group with a discussion group.

the new programme is:

1.30 – 5pm Open writer’s space – for women to come and use the library space to write in the company of other feminist women.

2pm – 4pm Writing exercises (for those who wish to take part). Please bring any

favourites, ideas and examples!

4pm – 5pm NEW! Feminist fiction, non-fiction and poetry discussion group. Interesting

consciousness raising discussion stimulated by sharing about what we are

currently reading.

Al always, the ‘Writers Space’ is for feminist writers, poets, students and all others who would like to come and write in company of like minded people and be inspired by the feminist books surrounding us. It will run the first Saturday of each month between 1.30-5pm.

Please come to write, come to attend the reading group, or both!

New ways of helping the Feminist Library: Just Text Giving!

There is an easy new way to support the Feminist Library and help us take care of our amazing collection.

You might have heard of Just Text Giving - this is a programme sponsored by Vodafone (we know!), that allows you to make donations to the Feminist Library simply by sending a text message.

The brilliant news is that this comes at no cost to you (other than the money you are donating!) and that we get 100% of your donation. After your donation, you will receive a link to a Gift Aid form, which will make your donation worth 25% more - we have tested this and it doesn’t take more than 2 minutes in total!

So let’s do it together:

Take your phone, and simply text ” FLIB35 £10″ to 70070 – and you are done!

You can only donate a maximum of £10, but you can do it as many times as you want, and choose any amount between £1 and £10 – so why not tie this up with your morning coffee, buy one for yourself and donate £2 to the library!

Volunteers wanted for the Collections team!

Are you a library/archives student looking for experience in a radical library setting, or a part-

time or retired librarian who is keen to use your skills to help us with lots of exciting

projects?

The Feminist Library has survived for most of its 35 years due to committed

volunteers. We house an amazing collection of second wave material which we want

to preserve while continuing to collect contemporary material, and we have created a

firm activist standing in the current feminist community. Come along and be part of

it.

We need help with completing the task of getting the collection onto our online

catalogue, and with sorting duplicates and donations, including a recent large bequest

from a leading academic in the gender and education field.

We are particularly looking for people with experience of the following, but all levels

of interest are most welcome:

Classification schemes and cataloguing
Archive experience
Knowledge of secondhand/rare books
Stock management
IT website/blog archiving skills

Calling all feminist writers and readers!

‘Writers Space’ is for feminist writers, poets, students and all others who would like to come and write in company of like minded people and be inspired by the feminist books surrounding us. It will run the first Saturday of each month between 1.30-5pm.

I am pleased to say the Feminist fiction and poetry reading group shall also be running between 4pm – 5pm!

If you have a favourite book or poem that you would like to share something about, and/or an idea for a novel or poetry for a group read, please bring it with you.

Tues 12 April: Upstairs at the Library: a singing workshop with Womensong

The second event in the “Upstairs at the Library” series will be an evening of music with the amazing ladies of Womensong.

The night will be divided between show and workshop, in the first part the choir will sing some feminist songs and in the second part there will be a more interactive part of the evening where we can all get to learn the songs.

There will also be food and you’ll be able to share the evening with amazing people, with the added bonus of the opportunity to visit the Library and get a copy of our amazing newsletter. If you have missed the fun of the Birthday Benefit, you can still pick up a programme and buy one of the limited edition tote bags.

Weds 20th April: Filament Magazine presents “Where are the women who photograph men?”

Women are increasingly found leading the field in all types of photography, from war coverage to Page 3, but why have so few women even dabbled with photographing men as erotic subjects? Suraya Sidhu Singh,editor of Filament explores some of the reasons usually given for this phenomenon. Four photographers working in this area – Migle Backovaite, Alex Brew, Jacqueline Dunkley-Insight and Victoria Gugenheim display and speak about their work. This event is suitable for adults only.

Evening opening for new volunteers

The Birthday Benefit brought some wonderful new people to the Feminist Library. Many of those who helped to organise the event expressed interest in volunteering on a more regular basis, and many who attended also enquired about opportunities to help. In light of this, we have organised a get together for potential new volunteers on Wednesday 23 February 2011 at 7pm at the library, which is based at 5 Westminster Bridge Road, London, SE1 7XW.

It will be the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in playing an active role in the library’s future to get to know us, meet some of the volunteers and have a chat about getting involved. Of course, you will also get the chance to browse the collection and find out what we’re all about!
